Tarangire elephants in brief
Elephant groups gather along the Tarangire River and on the open savannas, and the dry season is when they are easiest to find. As seasonal water holes dry out, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo and hartebeest also move to the river corridor, so a drive along the water often shows several species at once. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the chances are good in the dry months.
The park covers 2,850 kmยฒ and is part of the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem. Many elephants move in and out of the park, and counts usually cover the wider ecosystem rather than the park alone. That is why a single number for "elephants in Tarangire" is hard to give.

Best months for Tarangire elephants
Seasons in the park.
| Months | Season | What it means for your visit |
|---|---|---|
| June to October | Long dry season | Water holes shrink, and elephants and other animals concentrate along the river and in the swamps |
| November and December | Short rains | Tracks can get soft; flooded crossings are possible |
| January and February | Relatively dry period | A drier spell between the rains |
| March to May | Long rains | Wet tracks; a four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended |
For most visitors, the dry months from June to October are the usual choice for elephants. The short rains start in October or November, so the line between the two seasons is soft. See weather and best time for the full picture, and book early for the long dry season.

Tarangire elephant safaris
Game drives and day trips to the park, where elephants are the main draw in the dry season.
Where to look for elephants
Three kinds of places in the park.
The river corridor
The Tarangire River is the park's main water source in the dry season. Herds come down to drink. See the river and Silale Swamp page.
Silale Swamp
In the dry season the swamp is a refuge for elephants, buffalo and birds. Wet hollows can be soft, so follow your guide's advice on which tracks are open.
Baobab hills and savanna
Elephants feed on the open savannas among baobab trees. The trees show the other side of the relationship, because elephants break open trunks for water. See the baobab page.

Counts, research and what the numbers mean
The figures cover different areas and years.
An estimate for the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem in the 2019 rainy season is 4,538 elephants (standard error 987) over an area of 16,523 kmยฒ. This is an ecosystem figure from 2019, so it is neither a count of the park alone nor a count for 2026. Another estimate for the ecosystem is 4,624 with a margin of 1,072. Round figures such as "2,500+" or "3,000+" are sometimes quoted, so treat them with caution.
The state wildlife research institute took over a long-running elephant research project in April 2022. The project follows 29 family groups of the northern part of the population. That figure counts monitored groups, not all herds in the park. In the 1970s and 1980s, ivory poaching hit the elephants hard, and they retreated into the park. Numbers recovered from the 1990s; read more under history.

Watching elephants with care
Rules from the park authority and common sense.
Stay on the tracks
Keep to the marked tracks and leave the vehicle only at the designated stops. Walks are done with an authorised ranger.
Do not feed or crowd
Never feed or crowd the animals. Keep your distance, and do not block the paths elephants use to reach water.
Drones
Drones need prior written permission from the park authority.
Keep a safe distance and follow your guide. If you want to compare the park with a neighbour, Lake Manyara's wildlife has its own page. To plan the trip, look at the Tarangire safari page and the night drive and walks.

Tarangire elephants: frequently asked questions
How many elephants live in Tarangire?
No count exists for the park alone. An estimate of 4,538 elephants (2019, rainy season) covers the whole Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem. Numbers seen in the park change with the season.
When is the best time to see elephants?
The dry season from June to October is the best time. Animals gather along the river as water holes dry out. No sighting is guaranteed.
Can I see elephants on a day trip from Arusha?
Yes, a day trip can include elephants, especially in the dry season. The drive is long, so time for game drives is limited. See day trips from Arusha.
Why do elephants damage baobab trees?
Elephants break open trunks to reach the water stored inside, which can damage old trees. Not every wound on a baobab comes from elephants.
Is it safe to leave the vehicle near elephants?
No. Leave the vehicle only at designated stops and follow your guide and ranger.
Is this site run by the park?
No. This is an independent guide with no link to TANAPA or any operator.
