Tarangire Lodges and Camps

You can stay in the park at campsites, along the river and near Silale, at the park boundary, or outside in towns used on multi-day routes. Here is how the options differ and what to book early.

Where to stay at Tarangire

Tarangire National Park offers more than one type of stay. The park has public campsites, special campsites that must be booked in advance, and camps and lodges along the river, in the Silale area and at the edge of the park. There is no single "lodge in the park", so there is a real choice between a basic tent, a camp near the river and a place on the boundary.

Outside the park, the towns of Karatu and Mto wa Mbu serve as overnight stops on multi-day routes. If you book a 2 or 3 day safari that also visits Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro, your nights are usually there and not inside Tarangire. Those towns are not next to the main gate, so do not assume equal distances.

For most visitors who want to wake up in the park, a camp along the river is the one to look at first. For a short trip with Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro, nights in Karatu or Mto wa Mbu fit the route better.

Tarangire accommodation: rates and what is extra

These are the park rates of the 2023/24 tariff, shown before tax. Check the current amount before you book. On a safari package, they are often included in the price or charged as extra, so read the inclusions.

  • Public campsite: $30 per adult and $5 per child aged 5 to 15 for non-EAC visitors and residents. For East African citizens it was TZS 5,000 and TZS 2,500.
  • Special campsite: $60 per adult from July to September and $50 from October to June, with advance booking required.
  • Hostel: $10 per person per night.
  • Rest house: $30 per person per night.
  • Cottages with breakfast: $100 for a single and $150 for a double, charged per person and night under that tariff.

A separate concession fee exists for hotels, so do not assume that a room price covers the park entry, the concession fee and any activities. Ask what is included.

How to choose and book

Four questions to settle before you pay.

Book early for the dry season

The long dry season from June to October is when the animals gather along the river, so book early for it. See the weather and best time to visit for the months.

Ask what the price covers

Park entry, vehicle fees, lodging and activities are separate items. A package may include some of them and not others.

Check the route to the camp

Tracks to camps can be soft in the rains. See getting to Tarangire from Arusha for the road and the gate hours.

Match the camp to the day

If you plan an early start or a late return, a camp inside the park saves driving. If the Ngorongoro Crater is next on your route, read about staying in Karatu.

Tarangire lodges: frequently asked questions

Can I stay inside Tarangire National Park?

Yes. The park has public campsites, special campsites and camps and lodges along the river, in the Silale area and at the park boundary.

Where do I sleep on a multi-day safari?

On routes that combine Tarangire with Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro, nights are usually spent in Karatu or Mto wa Mbu, outside the parks.

When should I book?

For the long dry season from June to October, book early.

Does the room price include park fees?

Do not assume so. Entry, vehicle fees, lodging and activities are separate items, and a hotel concession fee exists as well. Ask what the price covers.

Is this the official Tarangire accommodation site?

No. This is an independent guide. It is not the official site of Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) and not connected to any camp or lodge. Book with the operator you choose.
