A Tarangire day trip: what to expect
A Tarangire day trip is a guided game drive that you fit between a long drive out and a long drive back. The park lies in the Manyara Region, and the road from Arusha runs through Makuyuni and Minjingu. The last sections are park tracks, and a four-wheel-drive is recommended in the rainy months.
Most day trips start early in the morning. The time you spend watching animals is shorter than the time on the road, so a day trip works best as a first look. If elephants and baobabs are your main aim, think about a night near the park, which gives you the early and late hours when the animals are active.

Tarangire day trip from Arusha
How the day usually runs.
The drive out
Plan 2.5 to 3 hours from Arusha to the park. Your vehicle will pick you up early, and the exact pickup time depends on your operator and your hotel. Ask for it when you book.
In the park
The game drive follows the park tracks, often along the Tarangire River. Elephants, giraffes, zebras and buffalo are the animals most visitors hope for, and lions and leopards also live here. Chances are good, but nothing is guaranteed. Stops for pictures and breaks happen at the marked points.
The way back
The gates close at 6 p.m., so plan to be on your way out of the park by then. The drive back takes about as long as the drive out. Do not plan an evening flight or a tight onward connection for the same day.
A day trip is not the same as a day of game watching. Count the drive in your plan and ask what the tour includes, such as the park fee, the vehicle, the guide and food.
Tarangire day trip from Karatu
Karatu sits on the northern circuit and is a common night stop on a 3 day route that combines Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. If you already sleep near Karatu, a day in Tarangire can slot into a longer trip.
Do not assume a public bus to the park gate. Organised tours are the practical way, and a vehicle that handles park tracks is the safer choice if you arrange transport yourself. The tour listings above show which day products currently start from Karatu.

Ways to reach Tarangire in one day
Road is the standard, and flying is an option.
| Option | Time to the park | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| By road from Arusha | 2.5 to 3 hours | Via Makuyuni and Minjingu, last sections on park tracks |
| By air from Arusha | Timetable flight to Kuro airstrip, via Manyara | 2026 timetable: daily departure about 10:45, arrival about 11:20, return about 11:35 to 11:45, subject to a minimum of 2 seats |
| From Karatu | Depends on the route | Karatu is the night stop of the 3 day route, ask for the pickup time |
| Overnight near the park | โ | Gives you early and late hours in the park |
For most visitors, the road trip from Arusha is the simplest day trip. If you have the time, a night near the park gives you more hours with the animals than any day trip. Check the current timetable before you plan around a flight, and see the Arusha to Tarangire page for the route.
What to check before you book
The wording differs more than you expect.
The park fee
Check whether the park fee is in the price or paid extra. Under the current rules the fee is valid for 24 hours from entry, while the 2023/24 tariff gave a day permit for 12 daylight hours. Check the current amount before you pay. The park fee page explains the categories.
Pickup and return
Ask where and when you are picked up and when you return. A day trip that leaves late reaches the park late.
Vehicle and guide
Ask about the vehicle type, the group size and whether the guide speaks your language.
Food and water
Check what is included and bring drinking water. There are tsetse flies in parts of the park, so wear covered clothing and use insect repellent.
